Silver brushes have long been a favorite of mine for a couple of simple reasons. Their brushes keep their flexibility and shape over long periods of heavy use. I tend to be a scrubber and a scumbler in working my paint and this is clearly a more than useful quality. The brush shapes in all categories are extremely well designed and provide excellent tools for all the different needs one might have in rendering your images. With a very good combination of both bristle brushes and their more delicate sable brethren, they provide versatility to work in all mediums. To round out the offerings they also have an excellent selection for beginning

Over the course of his career, Nelson Shanks has established himself as a world-renowned painter, teacher and art historian. He has passed on his artistic insight and talents by teaching in top art institutions across the United States, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 2002, Nelson founded Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; an academy dedicated to the study, practice and spread of realist art using the philosophy and techniques espoused by Mr. Shanks. Notable commissions include H.R.H., Diana Princess of Wales, His Holiness, John Paul II, President Ronald Reagan, President William Jefferson Clinton and Luciano Pavarotti.
His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Kensington Palace in London, and Fortezza Firmafede in Sarzana, Italy. Most recently, during the summer and fall of 2011, Nelson was invited to show solo exhibitions in Russia at The Russian Museum, St. Petersburg and The Russian Academy of Art, Moscow. He is one of only two living American painters to have been invited to exhibit at either of these venues.
Nelson is a true realist, capturing the very essence of his subjects down to the bone, and evoking human emotions and experiences in each portrayal no matter how famous or illustrious the subject may be. In the words of the artist, himself, “The Realist painting must be nothing less than a meditation on the nature of existence and the individual. It must create likeness with the power to kindle the observer’s imagination and awaken memories… It must encompass all
that the Realist painter sees before his eyes and therefore feels in his heart.”
Shanks has indeed accomplished this, and evidence of this can be seen in his many masterpieces and lends itself to the notoriety and reputation he has gained across the globe.
Over the years Nelson and Silver Brush Ltd came together to create 4 artist brush sets that represented exactly what he felt artists needed to begin their portrait painting journey.
